Things to do in the Almerimar area

Few areas can offer such a wide variety of activities, from the relatively gentle – walking, cycling – to the more adventurous -  sailing, windsurfing, skiing, parasailing, and hang gliding.

Tennis and Padel Tennis (a Spanish version of tennis played on a smaller, walled court) are both available on site.

Walking & Cycling

The area immediately around Almerimar is flat, making for very pleasant walking and cycling. There is a paved promenade all the way along the beach, which makes an ideal spot for a gentle stroll in the evening. To the east of the town, the nature reserve of  Punta Entinas – Sabinal is a facinating location, with a wild life of all kinds, including flamingos.
For the more adventurous, the hills and mountains of the Alpujaras and Sierra Nevada are just  a short drive away.

Sailing and Windsurfing

There is a sailing school in the marina, offering tuition. Windsurfing is also available, as is kite surfing, which is very popular. There is also a Rowing centre on Lago Victoria.

Horse Riding

There is an equestrian centre at the far eastern end of Almerimar.

Golf

There is a golf course only a few moments away, Golf Almerimar, in the centre of Almerimar. The course is currently being extended from 18 to 27 holes. Tuition is available, and they even run courses for complete beginners. For more details, see here

Skiing

The mountains of the Sierra Nevadas are just to the north of Almerimar, and with over 20 peaks over 2000 metres, the ski season can be as long as 5 months. The resort of Solynieve - Pradollano is approximately 2 hours away.

Places to Visit

Roquetas

RoquetasA few minutes drive to the East, Roquetas de Mar is a family holiday resort which has three main areas: the town (pueblo), the port and the urbanisation where holiday apartments, hotels and tourist facilities are located. Roquetas has 3 km of beautiful blue flag beaches which are clean, quiet and safe. Two new attractions in Roquetas are the bullfighting ring, which seats 8,000 spectators and doubles as an international concert venue, and the Auditorium Theatre, with interior seating for 1,300 spectators.

El Ejido

Almerimar is in a fruit and vegetable growing region centred on El Eijido. The ‘plastico’, as the greenhouses are known, form the main commercial activity in the area. The tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and other vegetables grown are exported to the whole of Europe. El Ejido also offers a good selection of shops.

Almeria

The Alcazaba, AlmeriaThe city of Almeria is well worth a visit. During the 9th and 10th centuries, the city was a very important centre, and the remains of the Moorish fortress, the Alcazaba, are very impressive.
The narrow streets of the old town, and the cathedral, contrast with the many 19th century buildings, and with the wide avenues of the modern city.

Granada and the Sierra Nevadas

The Alhambra, GranadaAround an hour’s drive from Almerimar is the ancient city of Granada. Granada was a major centre during the Moorish occupation of southern Spain in the 8th century, and it was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492.
The best known attraction of Granada is the Alhambra, a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th C. This complex of buildings – including the summer palace called Generalife, with its fountains and gardens - stands at the foot of Spain's highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the city below and the fertile plain of Granada.
